Over the years the Food and Drug Administration has been portrayed variously as sharing a corrupt bed with the industries it regulates, being notoriously inefficient or doing the best it can with limited resources and an overwhelming mandate. Never before, to my knowledge, has it been called infallible.
And yet that is the position staked out by the U.S. Supreme Court and the Bush administration.
